NEW YORK — Extreme heat is bearing down on Connecticut and New Jersey Tuesday, with heat index values soaring as high as 104°F. A Heat Advisory remains in effect from 10 AM to 8 PM, urging residents to take precautions as temperatures feel dangerously hot.
Across the region, cities like Waterbury, East Haddam, Newark, and New Brunswick are forecast to hit heat indices of 103° to 104°F. Even coastal areas like Bridgeport and JFK will feel the brunt of the heat with real-feel temperatures in the upper 90s. Residents are urged to stay indoors, hydrate regularly, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
By late afternoon, attention shifts to severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of northern New Jersey, the New York metro, and parts of Connecticut under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. The primary hazards include damaging wind gusts over 58 mph, localized flooding, and isolated power outages. Some storms could arrive with little warning, especially between 4 PM and 10 PM.
The Weather Prediction Center has also issued a Slight Risk for Excessive Rainfall, prompting a Flood Watch across all of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Long Island. Rapid rainfall rates over already saturated ground may lead to flash flooding in urban and low-lying areas.
