New York, NY – Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms could sweep across the Tri-State area Thursday afternoon, bringing damaging wind gusts and the potential for power outages and fallen trees.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather has been issued ahead of an approaching cold front. The primary threat is widespread wind gusts exceeding 58 mph, with a 15%–20% chance of damaging winds within 25 miles of any location between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Cities including New York City, Paterson, Bridgeport, and New Haven are all within the zone of concern. Localized instances of 1-inch hail and flash flooding in poor-drainage areas are also possible, though less likely. No watches have been issued as of Wednesday afternoon, but a Severe Thunderstorm Watch may follow if conditions become more favorable.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and stay indoors during storms. Motorists should prepare for sudden wind gusts and potential downed limbs during the evening commute.

The next update from NWS New York is expected by 6 a.m. Thursday.
