Boston, MA – Light freezing rain and snow are expected to hit western Massachusetts and portions of northern Connecticut overnight into Monday, leading to hazardous travel conditions for the early morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, the icy mix will begin between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Monday. While snow and ice accumulation will remain light—generally a dusting to 0.1 inches—the glaze of ice could make roads dangerously slick. Drivers are urged to exercise caution during the morning rush, particularly on untreated roadways and bridges.

Areas most affected include southwest Massachusetts and parts of northern Connecticut, including the Hartford and Springfield metro regions. The freezing rain will primarily impact areas west of a line from Providence, Rhode Island, to Worcester, Massachusetts. Little to no precipitation is expected east of this boundary.

For Boston and areas further east, Monday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 40 degrees. South winds will increase to around 6 mph. By Monday night, rain is expected to move into the region, with temperatures hovering near 40 degrees.

The week ahead brings a mix of conditions. On Tuesday, periods of rain are likely, with warmer highs near 57 degrees. The rain will taper off by Tuesday night, giving way to clear skies and cooler temperatures around 36 degrees. Wednesday stays mostly sunny, but rain returns late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and allow extra time for travel on Monday morning, particularly in areas prone to freezing drizzle.
