Torrington, Conn. – Residents across Litchfield County are urged to take precautions Wednesday as unhealthy ozone levels prompt an Air Quality Action Day for Torrington, Oakville, New Milford, and surrounding communities.
According to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, ground-level ozone concentrations are expected to approach or exceed unhealthy standards from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Wednesday. Sensitive groups—including children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions—should limit outdoor activities and avoid prolonged exertion during peak hours.
Officials warn that high ozone can cause breathing difficulties, coughing, and worsen asthma symptoms. Key areas impacted include Gaylordsville, Terryville, and Thomaston, where commuters and outdoor workers are advised to reduce time spent outside and consider carpooling or public transit to cut down on emissions.
The Connecticut Air Quality Index recommends running air conditioners with clean filters and keeping windows closed through the evening. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are encouraged to monitor air quality at ct.gov/deep/aqi.
This air quality alert remains in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, with additional advisories possible if ozone levels remain elevated.
