Concord, NH – Drivers traveling along Interstate 89 this week may have noticed an increased police presence as state and regional agencies conducted a large-scale safety enforcement operation targeting commercial and passenger vehicles.

According to the New Hampshire State Police, a joint cross-border enforcement initiative with the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles resulted in the discovery of more than 190 total violations during nearly 150 traffic stops along I-89 on Thursday, January 22.

State Troopers assigned to New Hampshire’s Troop G Motor Carrier Enforcement Unit, along with members of Troop D and Vermont DMV’s Enforcement & Safety Division, carried out focused inspections in response to ongoing concerns about unsafe commercial vehicle operations on the interstate.

Authorities say 148 vehicles were stopped, including 87 commercial vehicles. Inspections of those trucks uncovered 130 commercial motor vehicle violations, ranging from mechanical safety issues to improper driver credentialing. As a result, 12 drivers and nine vehicles were placed out of service and removed from the roadway due to critical safety concerns.

In addition to commercial enforcement, troopers stopped 61 passenger vehicles for speeding, unsafe driving around large trucks, and violations of New Hampshire’s “Move Over” law, also known as Sheriff’s Law.

Officials emphasized that unsafe interactions between passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks remain a major safety risk on New Hampshire highways, particularly on high-volume corridors like I-89, which connects multiple counties and serves as a key route between New Hampshire and Vermont.

State Police say additional joint patrols are planned as agencies continue working together to improve highway safety and reduce serious crashes.
