COMANCHE, Texas – A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT this evening, followed by an urgent Freeze Warning from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Thursday, marking a dramatic swing in North-Central Texas weather. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth reports northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph will ease tonight as temperatures tumble toward 31 degrees by daybreak Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, the combination of strong afternoon winds and clear overnight skies will allow cold, dry air to settle into Comanche, Eastland, Mills, Stephens, and Young Counties, including the cities of Comanche, Eastland, Goldthwaite, Graham, and Breckenridge. Wind chills will dip into the 20s before sunrise in rural areas and sheltered valleys.
The freeze will likely end the growing season for parts of the region. Residents are urged to protect sensitive vegetation, wrap outdoor pipes, and bring pets indoors overnight. Loose outdoor items, such as patio furniture, garbage bins, and decorations, should be secured before sunset to prevent wind damage.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the combination of wind and falling temperatures could create hazardous travel conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles on U.S. 67, U.S. 183, and I-20. Motorists should use caution on bridges and overpasses where early-morning frost may form.
After a cold start Thursday, temperatures will gradually warm through the weekend with lighter winds and sunny afternoons. However, another front early next week could bring renewed frost potential to the Hill Country and western counties.
