COLVILLE, Wash. – A quick but potent early-season system will bring accumulating snow to the mountains of northeast Washington Sunday evening into early Monday, making for difficult travel on several high routes. The National Weather Service in Spokane has continued its Winter Weather Advisory from 5 p.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday for elevations above 3,000 feet across the Northeast Mountains and Okanogan Highlands, including Sherman Pass and Wauconda Summit.

According to the NWS Spokane office, total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected, with up to 8 inches possible around Sherman Pass. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will create areas of blowing snow and single-digit wind chills in exposed areas.

The Washington State Department of Transportation cautioned that roads such as Highway 20, Flowery Trail Road, and Orin-Rice Road will likely turn slick Sunday night, especially in shaded curves and higher passes. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, maintain extra following distance, and check road cameras before traveling.

Backcountry users should prepare for rapidly deteriorating weather conditions Sunday evening and avoid unplanned overnight stays in remote areas. Officials recommend carrying emergency supplies including blankets, food, and water in all vehicles.

Snow will taper by sunrise Monday, though icy patches are expected to persist through the morning commute.
