Columbus, Ohio – Freezing drizzle combined with earlier snowfall is creating icy roads and hazardous travel conditions across parts of central Ohio on New Year’s Eve.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 11 a.m. Wednesday, primarily impacting central Ohio. Light freezing drizzle is producing a thin glaze of ice on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces, increasing the risk of slips and crashes during the morning hours.
The advisory area includes the Columbus metro region and surrounding counties, where slippery conditions have already been reported. Snow and ice accumulation, though light, may be enough to cause dangerous travel, especially during peak commute times.
Motorists should use caution along major routes including Interstate 70, Interstate 71, Interstate 270, U.S. Route 33, and U.S. Route 23, where icy patches may linger even after precipitation tapers off. Bridges and overpasses are expected to be the most hazardous.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve late this morning as temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation ends. For New Year’s Eve tonight, no additional wintry precipitation is expected. New Year’s Day (Thursday) is forecast to be dry, with improved travel conditions across the region.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking on icy roadways. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and parking lots.
This alert is especially relevant for early commuters, overnight workers, and travelers heading out for New Year’s Eve activities.
