Wilmington, OH – Drivers across central and southwest Ohio may encounter slick conditions early this morning as rain moves into areas where temperatures are hovering near or just below freezing, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington.

According to NWS forecasters, a brief window of freezing rain is possible at the start of the Tuesday morning commute, especially in the circled region highlighted by the agency. This includes portions of the Columbus metro area and stretches of eastern and southeastern Ohio. As precipitation arrives before temperatures rise above freezing, a thin glaze of ice may form on exposed surfaces.

While widespread icing is not expected, even a short period of light freezing rain can create hazardous spots on roadways. NWS warns that bridges, overpasses, ramps, and elevated road sections will be most vulnerable. Sidewalks may also become slippery in affected communities.

Rain is expected to continue through the morning, gradually transitioning to plain rain as temperatures climb. Motorists traveling before mid-morning should plan for slower speeds, increased braking distance, and extra caution on untreated or elevated surfaces.

Visibility may also be reduced in pockets of heavier precipitation. NWS encourages residents to check updated road conditions at 511ohio.gov before leaving home.

Forecasters expect the icing threat to diminish by late morning as warmer air increases across the region. The remainder of the day will feature steady rain with gradually improving travel conditions.
