Columbia, SC – A warm, quiet start to the weekend will give way to unsettled weather as showers creep into the Midlands by Sunday and strengthen into Monday. While highs remain in the 80s, the risk of scattered rain could disrupt commutes and outdoor events early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, conditions stay clear Friday with highs near 79, before clouds increase Saturday. A slight chance of rain arrives Sunday afternoon, mainly after 2 p.m., with a 20 percent chance of showers. The better window for widespread rain develops Sunday night into Monday, with a 40 percent chance of showers, especially near I-20 and across Richland and Lexington counties.

By late Monday into Tuesday, the storm system deepens, pushing rain chances to 40 percent. According to NWS forecasters, gusty winds may accompany showers, especially in open areas and along higher roadways. Motorists should prepare for wet pavement, reduced visibility, and potential delays on key routes including I-26 and I-77.

Though no flooding threat is currently anticipated, the unsettled stretch could impact early school drop-offs and evening commutes. Residents are advised to check updates from the South Carolina Department of Transportation and to allow extra travel time when showers arrive.

Warmth will linger through the period, with overnight lows in the 60s, keeping any frost or freeze risks off the table. Still, forecasters recommend securing outdoor plans, charging devices in case of power flickers, and using caution on slick roads through early next week.
