Columbia and much of central South Carolina will see a wet and cloudy day today as a weather system approaches from the west, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia. Showers are expected to develop during the morning hours and become more widespread through the afternoon as stronger atmospheric forcing moves into the region.
Skies will remain mostly cloudy throughout the day, with periodic showers occurring on and off, rather than continuous rainfall. However, rain chances are high across the Midlands, with probabilities ranging from 90 to 95 percent in many locations. Columbia is forecast to reach a high near 64 degrees, while nearby communities such as Orangeburg and Sumter may reach the mid-60s. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected farther north, with Newberry near 60 degrees.
Cities across the region, including Augusta, Aiken, and Sumter, will also experience frequent showers, with daytime highs generally settling into the lower to mid-60s, which is typical for mid-December but may feel cooler due to cloud cover and damp conditions.
While no severe weather is anticipated, wet roadways and reduced visibility could impact travel at times, particularly during heavier showers this afternoon. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra stopping distance and remain alert during the commute.
Rainfall today will be beneficial for dry soils but could lead to minor ponding in low-lying or poor drainage areas. The unsettled weather pattern marks a shift from quieter conditions earlier in the week and sets the stage for continued active weather heading toward the weekend.
Residents across central South Carolina should keep umbrellas handy and stay weather-aware throughout the day as showers gradually increase in coverage and intensity, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.
