Columbia, SC – Confidence remains high that a winter storm could impact the Columbia area this weekend, raising concerns for hazardous travel, especially near and north of Interstate 20.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, impacts are possible as early as Saturday morning and could last through Sunday night, though exact timing and severity remain uncertain. Forecast guidance shows at least some impacts likely from a mix of wintry precipitation, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
The highest risk currently appears along and north of I-20, where probabilities for moderate impacts range from 50 to 70 percent. South of I-20, lower probabilities remain, but hazardous conditions are still possible depending on how precipitation types evolve.
Forecasters said freezing rain is a primary concern, as even light ice accumulation can make roads slick and dangerous. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads could become hazardous quickly if temperatures fall below freezing.
Drivers traveling on Interstate 20, Interstate 26, U.S. Highway 378, and U.S. Highway 176 should prepare for potentially difficult travel conditions, particularly during periods of freezing rain or sleet.
The National Weather Service also noted that very cold temperatures behind the storm could slow melting and extend roadway impacts into early next week, even after precipitation ends.
Residents are urged to begin preparations now, including reviewing travel plans and monitoring forecast updates closely as details become clearer in the coming days.
