Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina residents should brace for a steamy and stormy Friday as high humidity pushes heat index values to near 100°F and scattered thunderstorms roll in by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, partly to mostly cloudy skies will dominate much of the day, with rain and storm chances increasing after 2 p.m. Rain likelihood climbs sharply to over 60% by 6 p.m., especially in the Midlands, before tapering off around midnight.
Temperatures across central and eastern South Carolina, including Lexington, Aiken, and Sumter, are expected to reach the upper 80s, with some cities like Columbia and Bishopville nearing 90°F. Combined with heavy moisture, heat index values between 95°F and 100°F may make outdoor activity dangerous, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activities, and take breaks indoors when possible. Storms may bring brief downpours and gusty winds—drivers should be alert during the evening commute.
This marks one of the first extended heat days of the season for many inland counties. More updates will be issued if additional storms or advisories are expected.
