Columbia, SC – Heavy rain from strong Thursday afternoon thunderstorms could worsen ongoing flooding along the Congaree River, with conditions expected to remain hazardous through Saturday morning. The National Weather Service warns that low-lying areas near the river, including parts of the Congaree National Park and Carolina Eastman facility, could see extended water coverage and road closures.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, the Congaree River at Columbia is already above flood stage and may rise further with Thursday’s rain. Minor to moderate flooding is impacting areas in Richland and Lexington counties, with roads like Old State Road (SC-6) near Swansea seeing water over pavement. Water levels at Carolina Eastman measured 113.7 feet on Tuesday and are expected to peak near 119.4 feet.

Travelers should avoid driving through flooded roadways and heed barricades. Those in flood-prone neighborhoods should prepare for possible additional inundation. Outdoor events and riverfront activities are discouraged until waters recede.

While storms are most likely Thursday afternoon and evening, scattered showers could persist into Friday, keeping the flood threat elevated. Drier weather is expected to return by Sunday. More updates are likely if river levels continue to climb.
