Columbia, S.C. – Heavy rain could slow commutes and flood low-lying areas across central South Carolina Monday as thunderstorms roll through in the afternoon. Drivers should prepare for slick roads and possible ponding in urban areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, widespread showers will redevelop today, with storms likely to intensify after midday. These could bring brief downpours, small hail, and localized flooding in Richland, Lexington, and surrounding counties. High temperatures will hover in the upper 80s to low 90s before storms move in.

Rain is expected to be heaviest along the I-20 and I-26 corridors, where poor drainage could lead to standing water. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to keep cell phones charged in case of power outages.

Showers should taper off by late evening, though unsettled weather is expected to return midweek. More updates will be issued if additional warnings are posted.
