Columbia, South Carolina – A sweltering heat wave is gripping South Carolina today, with dangerous heat index values soaring as high as 112°F. A Heat Advisory took effect at 10 a.m. Sunday and will remain in place through tonight, prompting urgent calls for residents to stay indoors and hydrated.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, peak heat indices are expected to range from 107°F to 112°F, with minimal relief overnight as low temperatures stay near 80°F. The advisory covers much of central South Carolina, including Columbia, Lexington, Sumter, and Orangeburg.

The intense heat poses risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for those spending prolonged periods outdoors or working in direct sunlight. Health officials urge residents to drink plenty of water—even if not thirsty—wear loose, light-colored clothing, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, even for a short time.

The advisory may be extended if temperatures remain elevated. Stay tuned to local updates and check weather.gov/cae for the latest advisories and safety tips.
