Columbia, South Carolina – A significant temperature swing is underway across the Columbia area, with freezing overnight lows giving way to springlike warmth later this week, according to the National Weather Service.

Early Tuesday morning, temperatures at Jim Hamilton–L.B. Owens Airport were near 36 degrees, following a clear and calm night. Overnight lows are expected to drop to around 29 degrees, creating a freeze risk for sensitive plants, outdoor pets, and exposed plumbing across the Midlands.

The National Weather Service in Columbia reports that Tuesday will be sunny and mild, with afternoon highs near 48 degrees. Conditions remain dry Tuesday night, with temperatures falling back into the upper 20s before a stronger warming trend develops midweek.

By Wednesday, highs are forecast to reach around 53 degrees, followed by continued warming into New Year’s Day, when temperatures are expected to climb to near 59 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Overnight lows also moderate, rising into the mid-30s, reducing freeze concerns after midweek.

The warming trend peaks Friday, with highs near 62 degrees, well above late-December averages. However, moisture returns late in the week. Forecasters indicate a 60 percent chance of rain Friday night, with rain becoming more likely into Saturday. No winter precipitation is expected, as temperatures remain well above freezing during rainfall.

For commuters, students, and workers, the primary concern will be cold early mornings through Wednesday, followed by fluctuating temperatures that may impact energy use and outdoor plans. Drivers should watch for patchy frost during the coldest mornings, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as rain chances increase toward the weekend and temperatures continue to fluctuate across central South Carolina.
