Columbia, South Carolina – Travelers and residents across the Columbia metro area are facing flood advisories through at least Sunday morning as rounds of heavy rain swell the Congaree River, leaving parts of the city and surrounding Midlands at risk for water-covered roads and possible property damage. The persistent rainfall has already pushed river levels near flood stage, with forecasters urging caution in low-lying and flood-prone neighborhoods.

According to the National Weather Service, the Flood Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday, while a broader Flood Warning stretches for several rivers into Monday. River gauges along the Congaree near Columbia and Gadsden are expected to crest, prompting concern for neighborhoods and roads near the riverbanks. Major roads around Cayce, West Columbia, and stretches near the Congaree National Park could see high water, with flash flooding possible in areas with poor drainage.

Motorists should avoid crossing flooded streets or barricades and use alternate routes if high water is encountered. Residents in flood-prone zones are urged to prepare for potential evacuations, charge cell phones, and have a plan in place if water rises overnight. Thunderstorms will remain likely both Wednesday and Thursday, adding to the flooding risk and slowing drainage across the region. Emergency officials warn that floodwaters can rise quickly, especially after dark, so it’s critical to stay alert to new advisories.

Rain chances drop slightly by Friday, but wet grounds and swollen rivers mean flood threats will linger through the weekend. More advisories are possible as the situation develops, with updated forecasts expected by Wednesday morning.
