Columbia, South Carolina — A well-advertised winter snowstorm is developing across central and southern South Carolina today, with the heaviest snowfall expected this afternoon through the evening, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.
Snow is forecast to begin during the morning hours and intensify later today as the system strengthens. Storm-total snowfall of 2 to 6 inches is expected across much of the region, with locally higher amounts possible within heavier snow bands. Areas south and southeast of Columbia, including portions of Orangeburg, Aiken, and Sumter counties, are most likely to see the highest accumulations.
As snowfall increases, travel conditions will deteriorate rapidly, especially along major roadways such as Interstate 26, Interstate 20, Interstate 95, and U.S. Route 301. Gusty winds combined with falling snow may lead to reduced visibility, creating hazardous driving conditions during the afternoon and evening commute.
The National Weather Service strongly discourages travel once snow develops, warning that roads may quickly become snow-covered and slick, particularly bridges and overpasses. Emergency officials advise delaying or canceling non-essential travel until conditions improve.
