Columbia, South Carolina – Rain is expected to increase tonight and continue through Sunday, with most areas along I-26 and I-20 forecast to receive between one-half and one inch by Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, widespread rainfall will develop overnight and persist through much of Sunday. The precipitation is expected to bring needed moisture to parts of central South Carolina and the eastern Midlands.
Forecast probability graphics show a 90% or greater chance of at least a quarter inch of rainfall across Columbia, Orangeburg, Lancaster and Augusta. The likelihood of at least one-half inch ranges from roughly 74% to 94% depending on location. Probabilities for totals exceeding one inch range from approximately 24% to 46%.
Forecasters say most of the rain will fall during the day Sunday before tapering off early Monday morning. Temperatures are expected to remain near seasonal averages through the weekend before warming to above-normal levels next week.
Travel along Interstate 26, Interstate 20 and surrounding roadways may be slowed at times due to steady rainfall, particularly during periods of heavier showers Sunday afternoon and evening.
The rainfall is not currently expected to cause widespread flooding, but localized ponding on roads and reduced visibility may occur during heavier bursts.
Students, commuters and weekend travelers across Richland and Lexington counties may experience slower drive times Sunday.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and use caution when driving in wet conditions.
