Wyocena, Wis. – Seasonal weight restrictions will take effect Monday, March 9, on Columbia County trunk highways to prevent spring road damage.
According to a March 3, 2026 release from the Columbia County Highway & Transportation Department, vehicle weights on affected county roads will be limited to 60% of posted legal load limits once signs are installed.
Officials said the annual restrictions are implemented under Wisconsin Statute 349.16 and are designed to protect roadbeds that become unstable during spring thaw conditions. Moisture trapped in the upper layers of the subgrade combined with frost can weaken pavement, making roads more susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles.
The restrictions will remain in place until moisture levels decrease and roadbeds stabilize. At that time, signs will be removed.
County officials noted that certain exemptions may apply under state law. Operators who believe they qualify can contact the Highway & Transportation Department for confirmation and potential approval. Emergency or single-trip variances may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The restrictions primarily affect commercial carriers, agricultural haulers and heavy equipment transporters operating on county trunk highways.
For additional information, residents and carriers can contact the Columbia County Highway & Transportation Department at 338 Old Highway 16 Road in Wyocena, call 608-429-2136, or email highway@columbiacountywi.gov.
