Madison, WI – A Minnesota man has been sentenced to more than a decade in federal prison following a major heroin and fentanyl trafficking case tied to a Columbia County traffic stop.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Ernest McCurty, 43, of Minneapolis, was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in federal prison for possession of 100 grams or more of heroin with intent to distribute. The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson and includes five years of supervised release following incarceration.

Federal prosecutors said the case stems from a November 7, 2023, traffic stop conducted by a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Interstate 90/94 in Wisconsin. During the stop, investigators located approximately 394 grams of a heroin and fentanyl mixture concealed inside the vehicle.

Authorities also reported finding more than $110,000 in U.S. currency hidden in grocery bags in the trunk. A subsequent review of McCurty’s phones allegedly revealed messages connected to drug trafficking activity.

Court records show McCurty pleaded guilty to the federal charge on May 8, 2025. During sentencing, Judge Peterson cited several aggravating factors, including McCurty’s criminal history, his status on supervised release for a prior drug trafficking offense at the time of the arrest, and the broader harm caused by heroin and fentanyl distribution in the community.

The investigation was led by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Colleen Lennon.

Federal officials noted the case is part of the Department of Justice’s ongoing efforts under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative targeting drug trafficking, violent crime, and transnational criminal organizations.
