Portage, WI – Two separate traffic crashes this week in Columbia County have resulted in multiple arrests for impaired driving and drug-related offenses, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The first crash occurred around 2:43 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, at Military Road and County Highway E in the Town of Marcellon. Deputies responded after reports that a passenger car had struck a motorcyclist. Witnesses told investigators the car was speeding before impact, and deputies soon located a man walking away from the scene.

The driver, identified as Shannon Hurckman, 34, of Dalton, was allegedly involved in the crash and later arrested. Hurckman faces multiple charges, including hit and run, possession of fentanyl, and resisting an officer. His passenger, Tracy Wampole, 54, also of Dalton, was arrested for possession of cocaine and felony bail jumping. The motorcyclist suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In a separate incident around 9:31 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, deputies responded to a crash on Blackhawk Road in the Town of Caledonia after an automated 911 call detected a collision. Deputies found Jackie Anderson, 55, of rural Portage, allegedly impaired and in possession of drugs and paraphernalia. Anderson was arrested for OWI and possession of THC. Passenger James Gloyd, 73, was also taken into custody for intoxicated use of a firearm.

No serious injuries were reported in either crash. Sheriff’s officials said both incidents underscore the department’s focus on combating impaired driving and illegal drug activity throughout the county.
