Columbia County, FL – A traffic stop in Columbia County early Saturday morning escalated into a high-speed pursuit that ended with a PIT maneuver and the arrest of a Miami man, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
According to CCSO, Deputy Dawson attempted to stop a brown Jeep around 2:13 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 90 near Southwest Bascom Norris Drive after the vehicle allegedly ran a red light. Authorities say the deputy activated emergency lights and siren, but the driver did not stop and instead fled westbound on U.S. 90.
Deputies reported the vehicle reached speeds of approximately 87 miles per hour in a posted 75 mph zone and that the driver allegedly turned off the headlights while traveling westbound in the eastbound lane in an attempt to evade law enforcement. After passing Southwest Briley Avenue, the suspect reportedly continued fleeing from deputies, reaching speeds up to 108 mph.
The pursuit ended when the driver exited U.S. 90 onto County Road 137, where Deputy Dawson successfully executed a PIT maneuver, causing the Jeep to stop. While deputies waited for additional units to safely approach the vehicle, authorities say the driver allegedly attempted to switch seats with the front-seat passenger to conceal that he was driving.
All three occupants were removed from the vehicle and evaluated by medical personnel. No serious injuries were reported.
The driver was identified as Robert Peterson Cyron, 29, of Miami. According to CCSO, Cyron has 24 prior license suspensions and was arrested and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility.
He was charged with fleeing and eluding law enforcement and driving while license suspended or revoked as a habitual offender. Jail records show he is being held with no bond.
