Grand Junction, Colorado – Heavy snowfall continues to blanket Colorado’s high country, creating dangerous to at times impassable travel conditions across mountain passes and elevated terrain through early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across much of western and southwestern Colorado, including the San Juan Mountains, Gore and Elk Mountains, West Elk and Sawatch ranges, the Flat Tops, and the Grand and Battlement Mesas. Snow totals of 6 to 12 inches are expected in most mountain zones, with locally higher amounts on favored slopes. In the San Juan River Basin, including Pagosa Springs, snowfall of 4 to 8 inches is expected.
Travel impacts are widespread along high-elevation routes such as Vail Pass, Monarch Pass, Red Mountain Pass, Coal Bank Pass, Molas Pass, and Lizard Head Pass. Snow-covered roads, blowing snow, and reduced visibility are making travel very difficult, especially overnight and during periods of heavier snowfall. Areas above 7,500 feet on the Uncompahgre Plateau, Dallas Divide, and into the La Sal and Abajo Mountains of Utah are also seeing significant impacts.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary mountain travel, carry winter safety gear, and check road conditions by calling 511 before departing. Snow is expected to gradually ease Sunday morning, but hazardous conditions may linger on untreated roads well beyond the advisory period. Additional alerts could be issued if snowfall rates increase.
