Grand Junction, Colo. – Drivers heading into Colorado’s high country should prepare for snow-covered roads and poor visibility today as a late-season storm targets elevations above 9,500 feet with up to 10 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for much of western Colorado’s mountain zones, including the San Juan, Elk, Gore, and West Elk ranges. The advisory affects key mountain passes like Red Mountain, Molas, Lizard Head, Vail, Monarch, and McClure.
Snow totals are expected to range from 4 to 10 inches, with locally higher amounts above timberline. Cities and travel routes impacted include Telluride, Aspen, Vail, Crested Butte, and Lake City. Winds may down tree branches and significantly reduce visibility on narrow, winding roads.
Travelers should delay high-altitude trips or use extreme caution, especially near passes where slick conditions and sudden whiteouts are possible. Drivers are urged to check Colorado DOT updates and dial 511 for road conditions.
This storm mirrors previous late-May snow events and highlights lingering winter risks in Colorado’s high terrain. More advisories may be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
