Colorado – Snow and strong winds are creating hazardous travel conditions across high-elevation areas of southern and central Colorado Friday, with a winter weather advisory remaining in effect through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. MST Friday for the Eastern Sawatch Mountains above 11,000 feet and the Eastern San Juan Mountains above 10,000 feet. Impacted locations include Wolf Creek Pass, Cumbres Pass, and the Bonanza area.

Forecasters expect additional snow accumulations of up to 5 inches, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph, which may lead to blowing snow and rapidly changing visibility on exposed roads and mountain passes.

Officials warn that roads are likely to become slick and hazardous, particularly in high-elevation corridors. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning travel period, especially for motorists crossing mountain passes early in the day.

Strong winds combined with snowfall may create localized whiteout conditions at times, even where overall snowfall totals remain modest. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly in higher terrain.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and allow extra travel time when traveling through mountain areas. Travelers can check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.

For early-shift workers, commercial drivers, and travelers crossing southern Colorado passes, the advisory highlights continued winter travel hazards through the afternoon hours.
