Pueblo, CO – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the highest elevations of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where new snowfall is expected to bring hazardous travel conditions beginning early Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory is in effect from 5 AM Thursday to 5 AM Friday, covering elevations above 11,000 feet in both the northern and southern Sangre de Cristo ranges. Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of snow, with pockets of heavier accumulation possible near ridge lines around Blanca Peak and the Spanish Peaks.
Snow is expected to begin shortly after sunrise Thursday as moisture increases along the higher terrain. The period of steadiest snowfall is likely late Thursday morning into the afternoon, when colder temperatures will allow snow to accumulate quickly on high mountain roads.
According to the NWS, snow-packed and slick roads will be the primary concern for backcountry travelers, hikers, and anyone attempting to cross high mountain passes. While winds are not forecast to be particularly strong, visibility may drop at times due to steady snow and blowing powder along open ridges.
Snow will continue into Thursday night before tapering early Friday morning as the system weakens and shifts east.
Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and check Colorado 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling through elevated mountain corridors.
