Climax, CO – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Colorado’s high country, with heavy snow and dangerous wind gusts expected to impact travel and outdoor conditions into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the advisory covers the Eastern Sawatch Mountains and the Western Mosquito Range, including areas above 11,000 feet in East Lake County and parts of Chaffee County such as Climax and Bonanza. The advisory begins at midnight Friday and lasts through midnight Saturday.

Forecasters predict total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, with winds gusting up to 70 mph. These conditions are likely to make travel hazardous, especially across high mountain passes and exposed ridgelines.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed and use caution on snow-covered roads. Those planning mountain travel during the advisory should monitor road conditions via Colorado’s 511 service and consider delaying non-essential trips.

March snowstorms are not uncommon in Colorado’s central mountains, but wind speeds of this magnitude may result in whiteout conditions and increased avalanche risk. Backcountry users should check avalanche forecasts before venturing out.

Residents and visitors are advised to prepare for rapidly changing weather, secure outdoor gear, and stay informed via official updates.
