Pueblo, CO – A powerful winter storm is set to blanket southern Colorado with heavy snow and high winds, triggering a Winter Storm Warning that will remain in effect until 3 p.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, snowfall is expected to begin Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday across multiple mountainous regions. The Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, including areas around Cuchara, Weston, Stonewall, and the Spanish Peaks, could receive between 8 and 20 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph.

The Wet Mountains and surrounding elevations—including Rye—may accumulate 6 to 15 inches of snow, while lower elevations such as Walsenburg and Trinidad are projected to receive between 5 and 12 inches. The storm is forecast to impact Friday evening commutes with rapidly deteriorating visibility due to blowing snow and high wind gusts.

Travelers are urged to avoid unnecessary trips during the warning period. If travel is unavoidable, authorities recommend keeping a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle. For real-time road conditions in Colorado, dial 511 or visit the Colorado Department of Transportation’s website.

This storm follows a historically active snow season for the region and may bring whiteout conditions to major routes like U.S. Highway 160 and I-25.
