Colorado — A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across large portions of southeastern Colorado until 5 p.m. MST Friday, with accumulating snow and gusty winds creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected across much of Las Animas, Bent, and Prowers counties, while parts of Baca County could see 2 to 4 inches before the storm tapers off. In the Wet Mountains, additional accumulations of up to 2 inches are possible.
Wind gusts as high as 35 mph are forecast in several areas, including eastern Las Animas and Baca counties. The combination of falling and blowing snow is expected to significantly reduce visibility at times, especially in open and rural areas.
The warning covers multiple zones, including the Walsenburg and Trinidad areas below 7,500 feet, eastern and western Las Animas County, Bent County, Prowers County, the Wet Mountains, and Baca County. Cities and towns impacted include Trinidad, Walsenburg, Kim, Branson, Lamar, Las Animas, Rye, Springfield, and Walsh.
The National Weather Service warned that roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous. Blowing snow could lead to sudden whiteout conditions, increasing the risk of accidents during the Friday evening commute.
Residents who must travel are urged to use caution and carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight. Drivers are encouraged to check the latest road conditions by dialing 5-1-1 before heading out.
Winter Storm Warnings are issued when significant snow and reduced visibility are expected to create dangerous travel conditions. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Friday evening as snowfall diminishes.
Residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates for any changes to the warning.
