Walsenburg, CO – A major winter storm is taking aim at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains today, where forecasters warn that 10 to 17 inches of heavy snow could make travel extremely difficult—if not impossible—through tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 8 a.m. Wednesday to 2 a.m. Thursday for the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, including elevations both above and below 11,000 feet.

The warning covers high-elevation communities and travel corridors near La Veta Pass, Poncha Pass, Cuchara, Weston, Stonewall, Spanish Peaks, and Blanca Peak. Snow is expected to ramp up quickly this morning, becoming heavy through the afternoon and evening.

Forecasters expect 10–17 inches of accumulation, with blowing snow likely in exposed areas. Conditions may deteriorate rapidly on mountain passes, where snow-packed roads and low visibility could make driving hazardous. The Wednesday evening commute is expected to be heavily affected, especially for those traveling between the San Luis Valley and the I-25 corridor.

NWS officials urge travelers to delay plans if possible and to exercise extreme caution if travel is unavoidable. Anyone on the road should carry emergency supplies—including food, water, blankets, and a flashlight—in case conditions worsen.

The storm is expected to taper off overnight, with improving conditions by early Thursday.
