Grand Junction, CO – Residents across western Colorado should prepare for snow and potential travel disruptions as a winter storm system arrives Christmas Day. Forecasters expect snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in the San Juan Mountains and 2 to 5 inches in nearby areas. Lower valleys may experience light snow mixed with rain.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Junction, conditions today will remain mild with highs near 51 degrees. However, by tonight, showers will develop, intensifying overnight and into Christmas morning. Drivers are urged to exercise caution on roads, especially in mountainous regions where icy conditions and reduced visibility are expected.

On Christmas Day, temperatures will peak around 47 degrees in Grand Junction, with a 60% chance of rain and snow showers. Higher elevations are likely to see accumulating snowfall, posing potential hazards for holiday travelers. The Colorado Department of Transportation advises monitoring road conditions on highways, including I-70, where delays may occur.

Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring calmer skies with partly cloudy conditions and highs near 46 degrees. By Thursday, rain and snow showers could return, with more significant precipitation expected Thursday night. Residents should plan for cooler temperatures, with lows dropping into the 20s throughout the week.

The NWS recommends keeping emergency supplies in vehicles, especially for those traveling to higher elevations. Stay informed by checking local forecasts and road updates to ensure a safe holiday season.
