Trinidad, CO – A powerful spring storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to southern Colorado, potentially dumping more than a foot of snow in higher elevations by Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon for the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Snow totals between 7 and 13 inches are possible, especially in areas above 7,500 feet including Cuchara, Stonewall, Weston, and the Spanish Peaks region. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph, increasing the risk of downed tree branches and reduced visibility.

A separate Winter Storm Watch also covers lower elevations near Trinidad and Walsenburg, where snow totals may reach up to 8 inches between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Gusts as high as 40 mph may contribute to difficult driving conditions, particularly Friday night.

Travelers are urged to avoid mountain passes and monitor CDOT for real-time road updates. Residents should prepare for potential power outages and ensure vehicles are winter-ready.

This late-season storm highlights Colorado’s volatile spring weather, which often delivers significant snowfall even into April. Officials recommend securing loose outdoor items and planning alternate routes if travel is necessary during the storm window.
