Pueblo, Colo. – Strong crosswinds up to 65 mph could create hazardous travel conditions early Wednesday in parts of southern Colorado, especially near highways west of Trinidad and Walsenburg.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, localized gusty west winds are expected to spill down the eastern slopes of the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday. The strongest impacts are likely in Huerfano and Costilla counties, where north-south roads may experience dangerous crosswinds.
High-profile vehicles, particularly along Highway 12 near La Veta Pass and Highway 160 west of Walsenburg, should delay travel if possible during this window. The wind risk zone includes areas near Gardner, Cuchara, and Fort Garland.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and limit overnight travel in exposed areas. This event may cause brief power disruptions or falling debris in wind-prone corridors.
While the event is short-lived and localized, further advisories could be issued if conditions intensify or expand. Wind impacts may also extend slightly outside the marked zone.
