Grand Junction, Colorado – Wildfire smoke is blanketing Western Colorado this week, prompting health officials to urge residents in Grand Junction, Montrose, Telluride, Gunnison, and nearby areas to stay indoors until at least 9 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, an Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for Mesa, Delta, Montrose, San Miguel, Ouray, Gunnison, Hinsdale, and San Juan counties. The warning, issued Tuesday morning, highlights dangerous smoke from the South Rim, Sowbelly, Turner Gulch, and Deer Creek fires, especially near eastern Montrose County and southern Mesa County. Communities downwind of these fires—including Delta, Silverton, Nucla, Ouray, Lake City, and Gunnison—should expect periods of moderate to heavy smoke through early Wednesday.
Smoke could reach unhealthy levels, especially if visibility drops below five miles. Officials recommend everyone—particularly children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions—avoid outdoor activity and keep doors and windows closed. Residents should consider relocating if indoor air becomes unhealthy or if symptoms worsen. Limit driving and use air purifiers if available.
Advisories remain in effect through Wednesday morning, and updates are possible if smoke conditions change.
