Colorado Springs, Colo. – Thunderstorms are set to ramp up across southern Colorado starting Friday afternoon, raising concerns for flash flooding, dangerous lightning, and gusty winds. The National Weather Service says storms could intensify over the Pikes Peak Region, producing wind gusts over 45 mph and small hail.
According to the NWS Pueblo office, monsoon moisture will build through the weekend, fueling widespread afternoon and evening storms across the mountains and into the I-25 corridor. Heavy downpours are expected over higher terrain, particularly in Teller, Fremont, and El Paso counties, with runoff potentially flooding creeks, low-lying roads, and burn scar areas.
In Colorado Springs, storms are most likely after 4 p.m. Friday, with highs near 87 degrees before showers move in. Pueblo and surrounding plains communities face the same daily storm chances through early next week, with the strongest activity late in the afternoon. Travel along I-25 may be impacted by sudden downpours and low visibility, while backcountry hikers and campers should be prepared to move quickly to shelter at the first sign of thunder.
The unsettled pattern is expected to continue into midweek, with storms possible each afternoon through Wednesday. More weather advisories could follow if rainfall rates increase.
