Pueblo, Colorado – A hot, dry spell grips Colorado Tuesday, but strong to severe thunderstorms could hit the southeast Plains by late afternoon, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and the threat of hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, an upper level ridge will drive warmer and drier conditions across the region today. Most of the state will see isolated to scattered afternoon storms, especially between 2 and 8 p.m., with the most dangerous weather expected southeast of Lamar and La Junta.

While much of the state—including Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Alamosa—will see highs from the upper 80s to near 100°F, the southeast Plains (Las Animas, Baca, Prowers, and Bent counties) face the greatest risk for severe storms. Emergency managers warn that wind gusts could down trees or power lines and hail may reach the size of quarters.

Travelers along Highway 50 and U.S. 287 should be prepared for sudden weather changes, low visibility, and possible road debris. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, charge cell phones, and review emergency plans. If thunder roars, seek shelter indoors and avoid windows.

Storms are expected to weaken overnight, but isolated strong cells could redevelop Wednesday. More alerts may follow as the pattern continues.
