Pueblo, CO – A crisp fall chill will settle over southern Colorado this weekend, with the season’s first widespread frost or freeze expected by early Sunday. The National Weather Service in Pueblo warns that temperatures will drop below freezing across much of the southeast plains late Saturday night into Sunday morning, potentially ending the growing season for tender vegetation.
According to the National Weather Service Pueblo office, a stretch of cool, dry weather continues through Friday and Saturday, with highs in the 60s and lows falling into the 30s. By Sunday morning, clear skies and calm winds will allow for strong radiational cooling, sending temperatures into the upper 20s and low 30s from La Junta and Lamar to Springfield and Eads. Western valleys, including Alamosa, could dip even colder.
Residents are urged to take precautions to protect outdoor plants, plumbing, and irrigation systems. Draining hoses, covering garden beds, and bringing potted plants indoors can help minimize frost damage. Those with livestock or outdoor pets should ensure shelter and access to unfrozen water overnight.
The chill will ease slightly early next week as southerly winds return and temperatures climb back into the 60s. Until then, clear skies and light winds will make for classic fall days—and a cold, frosty start to Sunday across southeastern Colorado.
