COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The morning chill still clings to rooftops as a hazy dawn spreads across the Front Range, but calmer air today will give way to a much windier Monday. The setup — warm air, gusty west winds, and single-digit humidity — is a dangerous mix for fire starts across southern Colorado.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect Monday afternoon for El Paso, Pueblo, and Huerfano Counties, including Fort Carson and the I-25 corridor. Winds are expected to reach 25–35 mph at times with humidity as low as 14 percent. Any spark could spread fast under those conditions, and residents are urged to delay outdoor burning, welding, or any open flame work until safer weather returns Tuesday.
Today will be mild and mostly sunny, topping out near 68°F with only a light south breeze. Winds strengthen quickly by Monday morning, shifting west-northwest as highs surge toward 70°F. Behind the front, much colder air settles in Tuesday, dropping highs to around 50°F with crisp, dry air and calmer winds.
Travelers heading south on I-25 or west toward Canon City and Walsenburg should prepare for strong crosswinds Monday, especially in exposed areas and mountain passes. Fire crews are already on alert for fast-spreading grass or brush fires.
By late week, temperatures rebound slightly, setting up a dry, cool Halloween evening — ideal for trick-or-treating across the Pikes Peak Region. Long-range models hint that early November could turn much colder, signaling winter’s slow but steady approach.
