Pueblo, CO – A Pacific storm system is expected to bring snow to Colorado’s higher terrain starting Christmas morning, creating potential hazards for holiday travelers. Roads near the Continental Divide could see slick conditions, with up to 6 inches of snow accumulation possible.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo, precipitation will begin in the mountains early Wednesday, transitioning to light rain across the plains by the afternoon. Snowfall is forecast to taper off by early Thursday morning. Travelers along mountain passes and highways like I-25 should plan for delays and reduced visibility.
Slick roads are anticipated in areas above 7,500 feet, particularly near the Palmer Divide, San Juan Mountains, and Raton Mesa. The heaviest snowfall will be confined to elevations above 10,000 feet. On the plains, most areas will experience light rain or minimal snow accumulation.
Wednesday’s high in Pueblo is expected to reach 52°F under partly sunny skies, with winds remaining calm. Temperatures will dip to a low of 27°F overnight. Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday are forecast to be mostly sunny, with highs near 53°F.
The NWS advises travelers to monitor weather updates closely, as snowfall totals may change. Those heading into the mountains should carry chains, ensure proper vehicle preparations, and allow extra travel time.
