Colorado Weather Alert: Winter Storm Impacting Mountain Passes, Snow and Winds Through Wednesday
Grand Junction, CO – Winter weather is causing disruptions across Colorado’s mountainous regions, with significant snow accumulation expected through Wednesday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for multiple areas, including the Grand Mesa, San Juan Mountains, and Elkhead Mountains.
According to the National Weather Service, snow is expected to accumulate between 4 to 12 inches in affected regions, with locally higher amounts possible. Mountain passes like Monarch Pass, Red Mountain Pass, and Lizard Head Pass are expected to see challenging conditions, with winds gusting up to 60 mph in some areas.
Travel may be difficult throughout the day, especially during morning and evening commutes. Snow, combined with strong winds, could lead to reduced visibility and dangerous road conditions, particularly at elevations above 8,000 feet. Gusty winds are also expected to bring down tree branches, posing a hazard to motorists.
The advisory will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday in the higher elevations of the Grand and Battlement Mesas, and until 9 p.m. Tuesday in the San Juan Mountains. Travelers are urged to monitor conditions closely and exercise caution when driving. For updated road conditions, drivers can call 511.
