Pueblo, Colorado – Drivers across southern Colorado could face slick roads and sharply reduced visibility late Thursday night as a fast-moving winter system pushes wind-driven snow into the region, threatening both mountain passes and key highway corridors by the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service office in Pueblo, Winter Storm Watches are in effect for northern El Paso, Huerfano, and Las Animas counties, as well as the Wet Mountains, from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon. The greatest impacts are expected Thursday evening into early Friday, when strong winds combine with snowfall to create hazardous travel conditions.

The Palmer Divide and stretches of Interstate 25 could see rapidly changing conditions, even where snowfall amounts remain modest. Blowing snow may lead to sudden whiteout conditions, especially on open roads and elevated terrain. Officials warn that lighter snow can still accumulate quickly due to gusty winds, increasing the risk of spinouts and delays.

Across the southeast plains, commuters should plan for slower travel and allow extra time Friday morning. Motorists are urged to check CDOT road conditions, keep emergency supplies in vehicles, and avoid non-essential travel during periods of poor visibility.

Snow totals may continue to shift as the system develops, and additional advisories could be issued. Weather alerts remain in effect through Friday afternoon, with updates expected as conditions evolve.
