Rye, Colorado – Mountain travel across southern Colorado could turn hazardous beginning Thursday afternoon as a winter storm targets the Wet Mountains with heavy snowfall lasting into Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the Wet Mountains, including areas between 6,300 and above 10,000 feet elevation, from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon. Snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches are possible, with the highest totals expected at higher elevations near mountain passes and ridgelines.
The storm is expected to intensify Thursday evening, increasing the risk for snow-covered and icy roads during the evening commute. Conditions may remain difficult into Friday morning, especially along mountain routes near Rye and surrounding high terrain where plowing may struggle to keep pace with snowfall rates.
Residents and travelers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, limited visibility at times, and potential delays. Drivers are encouraged to avoid non-essential travel during peak snowfall, carry winter emergency supplies, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Backcountry travel is also discouraged as snow accumulation increases.
The winter storm watch means conditions are favorable for significant snowfall, and officials warn it could be upgraded as the system approaches. Additional alerts or advisories may be issued, and travelers should continue monitoring updates through Friday afternoon.
