Cumbres Pass, CO – A late-season winter storm is set to blanket Colorado’s high country with significant snowfall, prompting travel concerns through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Eastern San Juan Mountains above 10,000 feet—including Cumbres Pass and Wolf Creek Pass—from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 9 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters expect between 4 to 8 inches of snow during the advisory period.
The heaviest snowfall is likely overnight into early Thursday, with conditions deteriorating rapidly along high-elevation corridors. Commuters using U.S. Highway 160 over Wolf Creek Pass should plan for reduced visibility and slick roads, especially during the Thursday morning and evening commutes.
The advisory highlights difficult travel conditions, urging drivers to slow down and allow extra time for trips through mountain passes. Motorists are advised to call 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling.
While spring storms are common in Colorado’s mountains, this round of snow may catch some travelers off guard. Residents and visitors should stay alert for updated weather statements and be prepared with winter gear, chains, or snow tires if traveling through impacted areas.
