Colorado — Dry grass rustles and dust lifts across the Front Range as sunshine hides a growing threat. Winds strengthen through the morning, and humidity drops fast, setting the stage for dangerous fire weather just as the new year settles in.
The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for southern Colorado, including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and surrounding counties. The alert runs from Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon, covering areas along the I-25 corridor and into the foothills.
Southwest winds increase quickly, sustained between 15 and 25 mph. Gusts may reach 45 mph by late morning and afternoon. At the same time, relative humidity falls to 10–15 percent. That combination allows fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly.
Morning temperatures start near freezing, but warming is swift. Highs climb into the mid-60s by Sunday afternoon, well above normal for early January 2026. The air feels crisp but deceptively dry, especially near open fields and grasslands.
Meteorologists are closely tracking how winds align with terrain near Pikes Peak, the Wet Mountains, and the southern Front Range. Any spark could turn problematic quickly. Outdoor burning, welding, or activities that create sparks are strongly discouraged.
Travelers along I-25 should also remain alert. Blowing dust may briefly reduce visibility in exposed areas, especially near Pueblo and south toward Walsenburg. Secure light objects and use caution if towing or driving high-profile vehicles.
Looking ahead, calmer conditions return Monday with lighter winds and cooler air. The broader pattern remains dry through midweek, though late-week snow chances appear on the horizon as colder air edges south.
Fire weather may not feel like winter, but the risk is very real. Conditions can change fast under strong winds. Seeing gusty conditions or smoke near your area? Let us know what you’re noticing.
