Colorado — Dry grass crackles underfoot this morning as mild sunshine spreads across the Front Range. Winds stir dust along open fields south of Denver, and the air feels unusually dry for January. Conditions are calm now, but danger builds quickly by midday.

The National Weather Service warns of elevated to critical fire weather conditions today across portions of the Front Range foothills, South Park, and nearby plains. Warm temperatures, very low humidity, and gusty winds combine to raise wildfire risk, especially along the I-25 corridor and open grasslands. Avoid outdoor burning, secure chains on trailers, and report smoke quickly.

Temperatures climb sharply this afternoon. Denver reaches near 49 degrees, while Boulder and surrounding suburbs warm under sunny skies. Winds shift through the day, increasing fire spread potential. This threat eases later tonight as cooler air begins filtering south.

Changes arrive quickly after that. Thursday turns cooler, with highs dropping into the upper 30s. Clouds increase late, and a slight chance of snow develops Thursday night. Roads may turn slick after dark as temperatures fall into the single digits.

Friday brings a more noticeable winter feel. Snow chances increase through the day and into Friday night, with snow likely at times. While accumulations look light for now, untreated roads could become slippery during evening travel. Plan extra time if heading out.

Saturday stays cold and unsettled. Highs struggle to reach the upper teens, and another chance of snow lingers before tapering late. Flash freezing becomes a concern as any daytime melting refreezes quickly after sunset.

Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook hints at near-to-below normal temperatures lingering across Colorado, while active weather targets other regions. Winter isn’t finished yet.
