Clouds are already drifting over Pikes Peak, and damp pavement could greet early drivers south of downtown Colorado Springs. Light showers may pop up by midday, briefly cooling what starts as a mild March morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a 40 percent chance of showers develops mainly after late morning. Highs reach near 55 degrees, with north winds between 5 and 15 mph. Rainfall stays light, generally under a tenth of an inch.

Skies clear Wednesday, and temperatures climb to around 62. By Thursday, spring warmth builds further, with highs near 66 under mostly sunny skies. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Another system slides in late Thursday night. A slight chance of rain develops after 11 p.m., then mixes with snow after 2 a.m. Lows dip to near 30. By Friday, rain and snow become likely, especially after late morning, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation and highs near 53.

Drivers along I-25 and Highway 24 should prepare for changing conditions Friday afternoon into the evening. Wet roads could turn slushy as temperatures fall. This is prime flash-freeze season. Melted moisture can refreeze quickly after sunset.

Mountain zones west of Colorado Springs could see 1 to 2 inches of snow above 7,500 feet through Friday. Lower elevations remain mostly rain, but brief bursts of snow are possible.

Clocks spring ahead at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, March 8. We gain evening daylight, and a warming trend returns early next week, with highs pushing near 70 by Monday.
