Grand Junction, Colo. – Strong southwest winds and dangerously dry conditions are creating critical fire weather across northwest Colorado today, prompting Red Flag Warnings and Wind Advisories along the I-70 corridor from Parachute to Avon.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, gusts between 35 and 45 mph and relative humidity as low as 5% will persist into Sunday evening. Red Flag Warnings are in effect for most of northwest Colorado, with heightened concern for areas near Rifle, Eagle, and Vail.

Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and ensure all campfires are fully extinguished. Even small sparks could rapidly ignite wildfires under current conditions. Wind Advisories remain active through Sunday for high-profile roadways, including stretches of I-70 where visibility may also be reduced by blowing dust.

Fire weather risks will continue into the workweek, though winds are expected to weaken slightly. While Monday may see less widespread risk, dry fuels and low humidity levels will keep conditions elevated across much of the Western Slope.

More advisories could follow if wind speeds increase again midweek.
