Pueblo, Colorado – Warm temperatures and strengthening winds are combining to create dangerous fire weather conditions across southern Colorado on Sunday, prompting a Red Flag Warning for much of the region during the afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, low humidity, gusty winds, and unseasonably warm conditions will align Sunday afternoon to produce critical fire weather conditions. The Red Flag Warning is in effect from late morning through early evening, covering much of the I-25 corridor, gap flow areas, and the Pikes Peak region, including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Cañon City, and surrounding communities.
Winds are expected to increase steadily through the afternoon, with gusts strong enough to rapidly spread any fire that starts. Combined with dry fuels and very low relative humidity, even a small spark could lead to fast-moving grass or brush fires. The highest risk is expected near wind-prone areas along Interstate 25 and adjacent foothills.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, postpone activities that could generate sparks, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Trailer chains, outdoor equipment, and parking vehicles on dry grass should be avoided during the warning period.
Fire weather conditions are expected to ease Sunday evening as winds diminish, but officials stress that vigilance is critical until conditions improve. Additional fire weather alerts may be issued if strong winds persist or dry conditions continue into early next week.
